THE LIFE OF OUR LORD AND SAVIOR...JESUS CHRIST

THE COMING OF JESUS FORETOLD

As with all prophets they put into writing what the Lord God had spoken to them. The Prophet Micah prophesied where the Lord Jesus would be born.

As it is written:
Micah 5:2
2 But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for Me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.

God spoke to the Prophet Isaiah about the coming of His Son.  Isaiah put into writing what God had spoken to him.

As it is written:
Isaiah 9:6
9 For unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given, and the government shall be upon His shoulder: and His name shall be called: Wonderful Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

As it is written:

Isaiah 53:1-12
1 Who has believed our report?  To whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
2 For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant and as a root out of dry ground. He has no form nor comeliness and when we shall see Him there is no beauty that we should desire Him.

3 He is despised and rejected of men, a Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.  We hid, as it were, our faces from Him.  He was despised and we did not esteem [respectHim.
4 Surely, He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed [regarded] Him stricken, smitten by God and afflicted.
5 But He was wounded for our transgressions [violation of God's law], He was bruised for our iniquities [wickedness]; the chastisement [punishment] for our peace was upon Him and with His stripes [wounds, blood] we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned everyone to his own way and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
7 He was oppressed, and He was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth.  He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter and as a sheep before its shearers is dumb, so He opened not His mouth.
8 He was taken from prison and from judgment and who will declare His generation?  For He was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgressions of My people, He was stricken [punished]

9 And they made His grave with the wicked and with the rich in His death; because He had done no violence, neither was any deceit in His mouth.

10 Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief: when you shall make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His Seed, He shall prolong His days and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand.

11 He shall see the travail [pain] of His soul and be satisfied.  By His knowledge shall My righteous Servant justify many; for He shall bear their iniquities [wickedness].
12 Therefore, I will divide Him a portion with the great and He shall divide the spoil with the strong; because He poured out His soul unto death and He was numbered with the transgressors; and He bare the sin of many and made intercession for the transgressors.

THE COMING OF JESUS FULFILLED

The Announcement of Jesus

As it is written:
Luke 1:26-35

26 In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee,
27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary.
28 The angel went to her and said, greetings, you who are highly favored. The Lord is with you.
29
Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.
30 But the angel said to her, do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God.
31 You will conceive and give birth to a Son, and you are to call Him Jesus.
32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David,
33 and He will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; His kingdom will never end.
34 How will this be, Mary asked the angel, since I am a virgin?
35 The angel answered, The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.  So, the Holy One to be born will be called the Son of God.

The Birth of Jesus

As it is written:
Luke 2:1-7

1 It came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered.
2 This census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria.
3 So all went to be registered, everyone to his own city.

4 Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth into Judea, to the city of David which is called Bethlehem because he was of the house and lineage of David:
5 to be registered with Mary his betrothed wife, who was with child.

6 So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered.
7 She brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling clothes, and laid Him in a manger because there was no room for them in the Inn.

The Circumcision and Naming of Jesus

As it is written:
Luke 2:21-24

21 When eight days were completed for the circumcision of the child, His name was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb.
22 Now when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were completed, they brought Him to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord.

23 As it is written in the law of the Lord, every male who opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;
24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the law of the Lord, a pair of turtle doves or two young pigeons.

As it is written:
Luke 2:39

39 So when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own city, Nazareth.

The Wise Men Visit the Home of Joseph and Mary

After Joseph and Mary had performed all the duties according to the law of God when a male child is born, they returned to their home in Nazareth, a village in Galilee.

About two years after Jesus was born, wise men arrived in the town of Jerusalem in search of Jesus.  Jesus was born in the town of Bethlehem, but His home was in Nazareth. The wise men followed the star to the home of Joseph and Mary in Nazareth.

As it is written:

Matthew 2:1-3
1 When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem,
2 Saying, where is He who has been born King of the Jews?  For we have seen His Star in the East and have come to worship Him.

3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

As it is written:
Matthew 2:7-12

7 Then Herod, when he had secretly called the wise men, determined from them what time the star appeared.
8 And he sent them to Bethlehem and said, go and search carefully for the young child, and when you have found Him, bring back word to me, that I may come and worship Him also.

9 When they heard the king, they departed; and behold, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, until it came and stood over where the young child was.
10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.

11 And when they had come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary His mother, and fell down, and worshipped Him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto Him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

12 And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed unto their own country another way.

Joseph Moves His Family from Nazareth to Egypt

As it is written:
Matthew 2:13-15

13 Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying; arise, take the young child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word; for Herod will seek the young child to destroy Him.

14 When he arose, he took the young child and His mother by night and departed for Egypt,
15 And was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying; Out of Egypt I called My Son [
Hosea 11:1].

Joseph Moves His Family Back to Nazareth after Living in Egypt

As it is written:
Matthew 2:19-23

19 Now when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,
20 Saying; arise, take the young child and His mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the young child’s life are dead.

21 Then he arose, took the young child and His mother, and came into the land of Israel.
22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea instead of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there.
Being warned by God in a dream, he turned aside into the region of Galilee:
23 And he came and lived in a city called Nazareth, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets; He shall be called a Nazarene.

THE STAGES OF LIFE ACCORDING TO THE JEWISH ORAL LAW

The Bible does not have scripture that would tell us about the growing up years of Jesus.  There is, however, written in the Mishnah (collection of instructions of the Jewish "Oral Law"), that gives an overview of the Jewish stages of life that are Jewish traditions.  The following is the oral law of Mishnah Avot 5:21.

Mishnah Avot 5:21 - Stages of Life

  ● Five years - is the age for the study of scripture, studies that for five years

  ● Ten years - for the study of Mishnah [oral torah], who then studies that for five years

  ● Thirteen years - for becoming bar mitzvah and subject to mitzvot, the commandments

  ● Fifteen years - for the study of Talmud [written version of the oral law], and then studies that for five years

  ● Eighteen years - for the bride chamber

  ● Twenty years - for pursuing a living

  ● Thirty years - at peak of full strength, authority

  ● Forty years - discernment

  ● Fifty years - for counsel

  ● Sixty years - to be an elder

  ● Seventy years - for gray hairs

  ● Eighty years - for special strength

  ● Ninety years - for bowed back

  ● One hundred years - for one that has passed away, ceased from the world

THE GROWING UP YEARS OF JESUS WAS NOT WRITTEN IN THE BIBLE

From the age of thirteen until the age of twenty-nine, there is nothing written in the Bible about our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  However, in the book of Luke, we read about Jesus attending the feast of the Passover at the age of twelve.

The Passover or Pesach is an important Jewish holiday.  The Jewish people celebrate Passover as a memorial of their liberation by God from slavery in Egypt, and their freedom as a nation under the leadership of Moses.

As it is written:
Luke 2:41-52

41 Now His parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover.
42 When He was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast.
43 When they had finished the days, as they returned, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem.
And Joseph and His mother did not know it.
44 But supposing Him to have been in the company, they went a day's journey and sought Him among their relatives and acquaintances.
45 So when they did not find Him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking Him.

46 Now so it was that after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions.
47 And all who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers.

48 So when they saw Him, they were amazed; and His mother said to Him, Son, why have you done this to us?  Look, your father and I have sought you sorrowing.
49 And He said to them, why did you seek me?  Did you not know that I must be about My Father's business?
50 And they did not understand what He had spoken to them.
51 And He went down with them and came to Nazareth and was subject unto them; but His mother kept all these sayings in her heart.
52 Jesus went home with His parents and increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.

JESUS AT THE AGE OF THIRTY BEGINS HIS MINISTRY

Jesus grew up in Nazareth, a village in Galilee, and He was well known by the people there.  The people in Galilee knew that Jesus was a Rabbi (studied Jewish Law), a teacher, and a prophet.  When the time came for Jesus to leave Galilee to begin His ministry, He was about thirty years old.

As it is written:
Numbers 4:3
3 From thirty years old and upward even until fifty years old, all that enter into the host, to do the work in the tabernacle of the congregation.

Luke 3:23
23 And Jesus Himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph...

Jesus traveled from Nazareth to the Jordan River to be baptized by His cousin, John the Baptist.  After being baptized by John, Jesus was led by Holy Spirit into the wilderness where He fasted for forty days and forty nights.  After fasting for forty days and forty nights; Jesus returned to Nazareth to begin His ministry.

Jesus Makes His Home in Capernaum

After ministering in Galilee, Jesus moved to Capernaum to fulfill the prophecy of Isaiah.

As it is written:
Isaiah 9:2-3
2 The people that walked in darkness have seen a brilliant light; on those who dwelt in a land of gloom Light has dawned.
3 You have magnified that nation, have given it great joy; they have rejoiced before You as they rejoice at reaping time, as they exult when dividing spoil.

As it is written:
Matthew 4:13-17

13 And leaving Nazareth, He came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the seacoast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim:
14 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias [Isaiah] the prophet, saying,
15 the land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles;
16 the people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.
17 From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

Jesus Selects Twelve Disciples to Be His Apostles

After Jesus began His ministry, He chose twelve men from among His disciples [followers of Jesus].  He taught them and anointed them and sent them out to minister to the people of Israel.  These twelve
men would be with Him for three and a half years; and would travel with Him to the cities and villages where He went to preach, teach, and heal.

As it is written:
Luke 6:12-16

12 And it came to pass in those days, that He [Jesus] went out into a mountain to pray and continued all night in prayer to God.
13 And when it was day, He called to Him His disciples: and of them He chose twelve, whom also He named apostles.
14 Simon (whom He also named Peter,) and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew,
15 Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called Zelotes,
16 and Judas the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, which also was the traitor.

Jesus Appoints an Additional Seventy Disciples

Jesus also appointed and anointed an additional seventy disciples to go ahead of Him to minister in cities and villages that He Himself would later come to preach, teach and heal.

As it is written:
Luke 10:1

1 After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also and sent them two and two before His face into every city and place, where He Himself would come.

Jesus Announces Who He Is to the People

As it is written:
John 6:35

35 I Am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.

John 8:12

12 I Am the light of the world.  He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness but have the light of life.

John 10:9

9 I Am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.

John 10:11

11 I Am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.

John 11:25

25 I Am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.

John 14:6

6 I Am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

John 15:1

1 I Am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser.

Jesus Announces His Assignment to the People

As it is written:
Luke 4:18
18 The spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the broken hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and to recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised.

Matthew 5:17
17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.

Matthew 18:11

11 For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost.

Matthew 20:28
28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give His life a ransom for many.

John 3:16-17

16 For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17 For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved.

John 6:38

38 For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of Him that sent Me

John 10:10

10 I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

John 12:46

46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believes on Me should not abide in darkness.

THE CITIES AND VILLAGES WHERE JESUS TAUGHT AND HEALED

As it is written:
Matthew 9:35

35 And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.

Cities and Villages:

JESUS' ASSIGNMENT HERE ON EARTH COMES TO COMPLETION

The end of Jesus assignment here on earth came to completion on the first day of the Passover Feast.

The Bible gives us four accounts of the Passover Feast.  We read about it in the Gospel of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.  Each account is of great importance, so I have included scriptures from all four Gospels.

Matthew's Account of the Passover Feast

As it is written:
Matthew 26:17-30
17 On the first day of the Feast of unleavened bread, the disciples came to Jesus and asked, where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover?
18 He replied,
Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, the teacher says, My appointed time is near.  I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.
19 So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover.
20 When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the twelve.
21 And while they were eating, He said,
I tell you the truth, one of you will betray Me.
22 They were very sad and began to say to Him one after the other, surely not I, Lord?
23 Jesus replied,
the one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with Me will betray Me.
24
The Son of man will go just as it is written about Him.  But woe to that man who betrays the of Son of man.  It would be better for him if he had not been born.
25 Then Judas, the one who would betray Him, said, surely not I, Rabbi?  Jesus answered, yes, it is you.
26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to His disciples, saying,
take and eat; this is My body.
27 Then He took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying,
drink from it, all of you.
28
This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
29 I tell you; I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it anew with you in My Father's kingdom.
30 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Mark's Account of the Passover Feast

As it is written:
Mark 14:12-26
12 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb, Jesus’ disciples asked Him, where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?
13 So He sent two of His disciples, telling them, go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him.
14 Say to the owner of the house he enters, the Teacher asks: Where is My guest room, where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?

15 He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready.  Make preparations for us there.

16 The disciples left, went into the city and found things just as Jesus had told them. So, they prepared the Passover.
17 When evening came, Jesus arrived with the twelve.

18 While they were reclining at the table eating, He said, truly I tell you, one of you will betray Me, one who is eating with Me.

19 They were saddened, and one by one they said to Him, surely you don’t mean me?

20 It is one of the twelve, He replied, one who dips bread into the bowl with Me.

21 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about Him.  But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man. It would be better for him if he had not been born.

22 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to His disciples, saying, take it; this is My body.

23 Then He took a cup, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, and they all drank from it.

24 This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many, He said to them.

25 Truly I tell you; I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.
26 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Luke's Account of the Passover Feast

As it is written:
Luke 22:14-22

14 When the hour came, Jesus and His apostles reclined at the table.
15 And He said to them, I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.
16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.
17 After taking the cup, He gave thanks and said, take this and divide it among you.

18 For I tell you, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.
19 And He took bread, and gave thanks, and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, this is My body given for you; do this in remembrance of Me

20 In the same way, after the supper, He took the cup saying, this cup is the covenant in My blood, which is poured out for you.
21 But the hand of him who is going to betray Me is with mine on the table.
22
The Son of Man will go as it has been decreed, but woe to that man who betrays Him.

John's Account of the Passover Feast

As it is written:
John 13:3-5
3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under His power, and that He had come from God and was returning to God.
4 So He got up from the meal, took off His outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around His waist.
5 After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash His disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around Him.

John 13:12-20
12 When He had finished washing their feet, He put on His clothes and returned to His place.
Do you understand what I have done for you He asked them.
13
You call me Teacher and Lord, and rightly so for that is what I am.
14
Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet.
15
I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.
16
I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.
17
Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.
18 I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill this passage of Scripture: He who shared my bread has turned against Me.
19 I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am who I am.
20 Very truly I tell you, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts Me; and whoever accepts Me accepts the one who sent Me.

John 13:21-30
21 After He had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray Me.
22 His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them He meant.
23 One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to Him.
24 Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, ask Him which one He means.
25 Leaning back against Jesus, he asked Him, Lord, who is it?

26 Jesus answered, it is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish. Then, dipping the piece of bread, He gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.
27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him.  So, Jesus told him, what you are about to do, do quickly.
28 But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him.
29 Since Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival, or to give something to the poor.
30 As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out.  And it was night.

Jesus Prayed for His Disciples

As it is written:
John 17:1-26
1 ...He looked toward heaven and prayed:
Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify You.
For you granted Him authority over all people that He might give eternal life to all those you have given Him.
Now this is eternal life: that they know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent.
I have brought You glory on earth by finishing the work You gave Me to do.
And now, Father, glorify Me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.
I have revealed you to those whom you gave Me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to Me, and they have obeyed Your Word.
Now they know that everything you have given Me comes from You.
For I gave them the Words you gave Me, and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from You, and they believed that You sent Me.
I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given Me, for they are Yours.
10 All I have is Yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to Me through them.
11 I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to You. Holy Father, protect them by the power of
your name, the name You gave Me, so that they may be one as We are one.
12 While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by
that name You gave Me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled.
13 I am coming to You now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of My joy within them.
14 I have given them Your Word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world.
15 My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that You protect them from the evil one.
16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.
17 Sanctify them by the truth; Your Word is truth.
18 As You sent Me into the world, I have sent them into the world.
19 For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.

20 My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in Me through their message,
21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as You are in Me and I am in You. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that You have sent Me.
22 I have given them the glory that You gave Me, that they may be one as We are one:
23 I in them and You in Me, so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that You sent Me and have loved them even as You have loved Me.
24 Father, I want those You have given Me to be with Me where I am, and to see My glory, the glory You have given Me because You loved Me before the creation of the world.
25 Righteous Father, though the world does not know You, I know You, and they know that You have sent Me.
26 I have made You known to them and will continue to make You known in order that the love You have for Me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.

As it is written:
John 18:1
1 When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley.  On the other side there was an olive grove, and He and His disciples went into it.

THE ARREST OF JESUS IN THE GARDEN OF GETHSEMANE

After Jesus had finished praying for His disciples, He along with His disciples left the house and went to Gethsemane, a garden located at the edge of the Kidron Valley.  Jesus would often go there with His twelve disciples.

Jesus, knowing that the chief officials were coming to arrest Him; had Peter, James, and John stand guard while He went to pray to His Father.

Jesus prayed three times about having the cup (what He must suffer) taken away from Him.

As it is written:
Matthew 26:39

39 And He went a little further, and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, O My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from Me: nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.

Matthew 26:42
42 He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O My Father, if this cup may not pass away from Me, except I drink it, Your will be done.

Matthew 26:44
44 And He left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words.

THE ARREST AND TRIALS OF JESUS

As it is written:
John 18:3-13
3 So Judas came to the garden, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.

4 Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to Him, went out and asked them, who is it you want?

5 Jesus of Nazareth, they replied.
I am He, Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them).
6 When Jesus said, I am He, they drew back and fell to the ground.

7 Again He asked them, who is it you want?
Jesus of Nazareth, they said.
8 Jesus answered, I told you that I am HeIf you are looking for Me, then let these men go
9 This happened so that the words He had spoken would be fulfilled: I have not lost one of those you gave Me.

10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)

11 Jesus commanded Peter, put your sword away. Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given Me?

12 Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials took Jesus and bound Him.
13 They brought Him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year.

THE JEWISH TRIAL OF JESUS

Jesus Goes Before Annas the High Priest

As it is written:

John 18:12-13
12 Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound Him,
13 and led Him to Annas first; for he was father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.

John 18:19-24
19 The high priest [Annas] then asked Jesus of His disciples, and of His doctrine.
20 Jesus answered him, I spoke openly to the world.  I even taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, where the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing.
21 Why do you ask Me?  Ask them which heard Me, what I have said to them: they know what I said.
22 And when He had finished speaking, one of the officers that stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, do you answer the high priest like this?
23 Jesus answered Him, if I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why did you smite Me?

24 Annas therefore sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.

Jesus Goes Before Caiaphas and the Sanhedrin

As it is written:
Matthew 26:57-67
57 Those who had arrested Jesus took Him to Caiaphas the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled.
58 But Peter followed Him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest. He entered and sat down with the guards to see the outcome.

59 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put Him to death.
60 But they did not find any, though many false witnesses came forward.
Finally, two came forward
61 and declared, this fellow said, I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.
62 Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, are you not going to answer?  What is this testimony that these men are bringing against You?
63 But Jesus remained silent.  The high priest said to Him, I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Messiah, the Son of God.
64 You have said so, Jesus replied. But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.

65 Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, He has spoken blasphemy.  Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy.
66 What do you think?
He is worthy of death, they answered.
67 Then they spit in His face and struck Him with their fists. Others slapped Him
68 and said, Prophesy to us, Messiah. Who hit You?

THE ROMAN TRIAL OF JESUS

Jesus Stands Trial Before the Roman Governor Pontius Pilate

As it is written:
Luke 23:1-6
1 Then the whole assembly rose and led Him off to Pilate.
2 And they began to accuse Him, saying, we have found this man subverting our nation. He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar and claims to be Messiah, a king.
3 So Pilate asked Jesus, Are you the king of the Jews?  You have said so, Jesus replied.
4 Then Pilate announced to the chief priests and the crowd, I find no basis for a charge against this Man.
5 But they insisted, He stirs up the people all over Judea by His teaching. He started in Galilee and has come all the way here.
6 On hearing this, Pilate asked if the Man was a Galilean.
7 When he learned that Jesus was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time.

Jesus Stands Trial Before Herod Antipas the Ruler of Galilee

As it is written:
Luke 23:7-11
7 When he learned that Jesus was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time.
8 When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased, because for a long time he had been wanting to see Him. From what he had heard about Him, he hoped to see Him perform a sign of some sort.
9 He plied Him with many questions, but Jesus gave him no answer.
10 The chief priests and the teachers of the law were standing there, vehemently accusing Him.
11 Then Herod and his soldiers ridiculed and mocked Him. Dressing Him in an elegant robe, they sent him back to Pilate.

Jesus Is Sent Back to Stand Trial Before Pontius Pilate

As it is written:
Luke 23:13-25
13 Pilate called together the chief priests the rulers and the people,
14 and said to them, you brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined Him in your presence and have found no basis for your charges against Him.
15 Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us; as you can see, He has done nothing to deserve death.
16 Therefore, I will punish Him and then release Him.
17 For of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast.
18 But the whole crowd shouted, away with this man. Release Barabbas to us.
19 Barabbas had been thrown into prison for an insurrection in the city, and for murder.
20 Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate appealed to them again.
21 But they kept shouting, Crucify Him! Crucify Him!

22 For the third time he spoke to them: Why? What crime has this Man committed? I have found in Him no grounds for the death penalty. Therefore, I will have Him punished and then release Him.
23 But with loud shouts they insistently demanded that He be crucified, and their shouts prevailed.
24 So Pilate decided to grant their demand.
25 He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, the one they asked for, and surrendered Jesus to their will.

THE DEATH OF JESUS BY CRUCIFIXION

The death of Jesus was that of crucifixion; being nailed to a cross.  In the Gospel of John, Jesus lets us know that neither the Jews nor the Romans, took His life, rather He laid down His own life.

As it is written:
John 10:17-18
17
Therefore, does my Father love Me, because I lay down My life, that I might take it again.
18 No man takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself.  I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again.  This commandment have I received of My Father

The prophet Isaiah prophesied that Jesus would suffer death.  As it is written: Therefore, will I divide Him a portion with the great, and He shall divide the spoil with the strong; because He has poured out His soul unto death: and with the transgressors: and He bare the sin of many and made intercession for the transgressors.  Isaiah 53:12

Isaiah's Prophesy of Jesus Death Fulfilled

As it is written:
John 19:16-27
16 Finally Pilate handed Him over to them to be crucified.  So, the soldiers took charge of Jesus.
17 Carrying His own cross, He went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha).
18 There they crucified Him, and with Him two others, one on each side and Jesus in the middle.
19 Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: Jesus of Nazareth, the king of the Jews.
20 Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek.
21 The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, do not write The King of the Jews, but that this Man claimed to be king of the Jews.

22 Pilate answered, What I have written, I have written.

23 When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took His clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.

24 Let’s not tear it, they said to one another.  Let’s decide by lot who will get it.
This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled that said, they divided My clothes among them and cast lots for My garment.  So, this is what the soldiers did.
25 Near the cross of Jesus stood His mother, His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.
26 When Jesus saw His mother there, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to her, woman, here is your son,
27 and to the disciple, here is your mother.  From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.

The Death of Jesus

As it is written:
John 19:28-37
28 Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, I am thirsty.
29 A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips.
30 When He had received the drink, Jesus said, It is finished. With that, He bowed His head and gave up His Spirit.

31 Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down.
32 The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other.
33 But when they came to Jesus and found that He was already dead, they did not break His legs.
34 Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.
35 The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe.
36 These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: not one of His bones will be broken,
37 and, as another scripture says, they will look on the one they have pierced.

The Preparation and Burial of Jesus

As it is written:
John 19:38-42
38 Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders. With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away.
39 He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds.
40 Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs.
41 At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid.
42 Because it was the Jewish day of preparation and since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.

The Resurrection of Jesus

As it is written
John 20:1-10
Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance.
2 So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, they have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put Him.
3 So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb.
4 Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.
5 He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in.
6 Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there,
7 as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus’ head. The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen.
8 Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed.
9 They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.
10 Then the disciples went back to where they were staying.

Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene

As it is written:
John 20:11-18
11 Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying.  As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb
12 and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot.

13 They asked her, woman, why are you crying?
They have taken my Lord away, she said, and I don’t know where they have put Him.
14 At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus.

15 He asked her, woman, why are you crying?  Who is it you are looking for?
Thinking He was the gardener, she said, Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have put Him, and I will get Him.
16 Jesus said to her, Mary.
She turned toward Him and cried out in Aramaic, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.
17 Jesus said, do not hold on to Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to My brothers and tell them, I am ascending to My Father and your Father, to My God and your God.
18 Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: I have seen the Lord.  And she told them that He had said these things to her.

Jesus Appears to His Disciples

As it is written:
John 20:19-23
19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked in fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said,
Peace be with you.
20 After He said this, He showed them His hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.
21 Again Jesus said, Peace be with you.  As the Father has sent Me, I am sending you.
22 And with that He breathed on them and said, receive the Holy Spirit.
23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.

Jesus Appears to Thomas

As it is written:
John 20:24-29
24 Now Thomas also known as Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came.
25 So the other disciples told him, we have seen the Lord.
But he said to them, Unless I see the nail marks in His hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.
26 A week later His disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, Peace be with you.
27 Then He said to Thomas, put your finger here; see My hands. Reach out your hand and put it into My side.  Stop doubting and believe.
28 Thomas said to Him, My Lord and My God.

29 Then Jesus told him, because you have seen Me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.

LUKE'S ACCOUNT OF THE DEATH, RESURRECTION AND ASCENSION OF JESUS

As it is written:
Luke 23:26

26 As the soldiers led Him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene, who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus.

As it is written:
Luke 23:32-43

32 Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with Him to be executed.
33 When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified Him there, along with the criminals, one on His right, the other on His left.
34 Jesus said, Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.  And they divided up His clothes by casting lots.
35 The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at Him. They said, He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.
36 The soldiers also came up and mocked Him. They offered Him wine vinegar
37 and said, if you are the king of the Jews, save Yourself.
38 There was a written notice above Him, which read: this is the king of the Jews.
39 One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at Him: aren’t you the Messiah? Save Yourself and us.
40 But the other criminal rebuked him. Don’t you fear God, he said, since you are under the same sentence?
41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this Man has done nothing wrong.
42 Then he said, Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.
43 Jesus answered him, Truly I tell you, today you will be with Me in paradise.

The Death of Jesus

As it is written:
Luke 23:44-49

44 It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon,
45 for the sun stopped shining.  And the curtain of the temple was torn in two.
46 Jesus called out with a loud voice,
Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit.  When He had said this, He breathed His last.
47 The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God and said, surely this was a righteous Man.
48 When all the people who had gathered to witness this sight saw what took place, they beat their breasts and went away.
49 But all those who knew Him, including the women who had followed Him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things.

The Resurrection of Jesus

Jesus was buried on a Friday afternoon.  The following day, Saturday, was the Jewish sabbath, a day of rest according to God's commandment.  Early on Sunday morning, Mary Magdalene, Joanna, the mother of James, and the other women went to the sepulcher and found that the stone had been rolled away, and that Jesus was not there.

As it is written:
Luke 24:1-7

1 Very early on Sunday morning the women went to the tomb, carrying the spices they had prepared.
2 They found the stone rolled away from the entrance to the tomb,
3 so they went in; but they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
4 They stood there puzzled about this, when suddenly two men in bright shining clothes stood by them.
5 Full of fear, the women bowed down, to the ground, as the men said to them, why are you looking among the dead for one who is alive?
6 He is not here; He has been raised.  Remember what He said to you while He was in Galilee:
7 The Son of Man must be handed over to sinful men, be crucified, and three days later rise to life.

The Appearance of Jesus to His Disciples on the Road to Emmaus

While the disciples in Jerusalem were in disbelief of Jesus having been raised from the dead, Cleophas and another disciple were on their way to Emmaus.  Emmaus was about seven miles from Jerusalem, a two to three-hour walk.  While on their journey, Jesus joined them, but they did not recognize Him.  Jesus talked with them about the scriptures that had been written about Him, beginning with Moses and the prophets.

It was late in the afternoon when they arrived in Emmaus, Cleophas and the other disciple invited Jesus to have a meal with them.  It was while they were eating that Jesus opened their eyes and they recognized Him, and Jesus vanished out of their sight.

Cleophas and the other disciple, returned to Jerusalem and went and told the eleven apostles, and those that were with them, what had taken place on the road to Emmaus.   While they were talking, Jesus appeared in their presence, and they were afraid; they thought He was a spirit.

Jesus had to prove to them that He had risen from the dead.  He did so by showing them His hands and feet.  He showed them that He was not a spirit by asking them for some food to eat, and they gave Him a broiled fish, and honey, and He ate it in their presence.

As it is written:
Luke 24:36-43

36 While the two were telling them this, suddenly the Lord Himself stood among them and said to them, peace be with you.
37 They were terrified, thinking that they were seeing a ghost.
38 But He said to them, why are you alarmed?  Why are these doubts coming up in your minds?

39 Look at My hands and My feet and see that it is I Myself. Feel Me, and you will know, for a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you can see I have.
40 He said this and showed them His hands and His feet.
41 They still could not believe, they were so full of joy and wonder; so, He asked them, do you have anything here to eat?
42 They gave Him a piece of broiled fish,
43 Which He took and ate in their presence.

The Ascension of Jesus to Heaven

After Jesus had eaten the broiled fish in the presence of His disciples, He had His last conversation with them.  In that conversation He told them that He would send the promise; Holy Spirit, of the Father to them.

As it is written:
Luke 24:44-53

44 And He said unto them, these are the Words which I spoke to you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning Me.
45 Then He opened their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,

46 And said unto them, thus it is written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:

47
and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

48
And you are witnesses of these things.

49
And, behold, I send the promise of My Father upon you: but you tarry in the city of Jerusalem, until you be endued with power from on high.
50 And He led them out as far as to Bethany, and He lifted up His hands, and blessed them.

51 And it came to pass, while He blessed them, He was parted from them, and carried up into heaven.
52
And they worshiped Him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy

53 a
nd were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God.  Amen.

HOLY SPIRIT CAME AS JESUS PROMOISED HE WOULD

As it is written:
Acts 2:1-4

1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

But of that day and that hour knows no man,
no, not the angels which are in heaven,

neither the Son, but the Father.

Mark 13:32
